 2016 Preview 


       With their 5-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 5A region 3, the Volunteers earned a spot in the playoffs in 2015. Central Clay County's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Vigor by a score of 26-14.

       Since 2010, Central Clay County has gone a combined 34-14. Their 71.0% winning percentage ranks 5th in Class 5A over the past six seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Central Clay County has gone a combined 34-14. Their 71.0% winning percentage ranks 6th in Class 5A and 26th in the AHSAA.

       The Volunteers are led by head coach Kris Herron who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 24-12 over the past three seasons at Central Clay County. Under his direction the Volunteers have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Herron.

       Coach Herron's overall record as a head football coach in six seasons stands at 57-20 (74.0%). Over the course of his career, Coach Herron's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of six times and won one region championship.

      

      The Central Clay County Volunteers will play in Class 5A region 4 during the 2016 season. Following realignment, the Volunteers remain in 5A but move from region 3 over to region 4.

       The Volunteers should contend for a playoff spot in Region 4 this season.

       The Volunteers open the 2016 season on the road against non-region opponent Munford on Friday, August 19 at Munford Stadium. Last year the Munford Lions finished with an overall record of 10-4 and in second place in Class 4A region 3. The Lions lost in the semi-finals round of the Class 4A playoffs to Leeds by a score of 48-20.

       Central Clay County and Munford have met a total of 8 times on the football field. The Volunteers have a 8-0-0 record against the Lions. They last met in 2018 with Central Clay County winning by a score of 35-14.

  








Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

Luverne 'Toad' Wise was the first female football player in Alabama and may have been the first in the country. She was a kicker for the Escambia County Blue Devils in 1939-40.
